WHAT IS TOURISM?
Tourism involves visiting a foreign place. The word ‘tourism’ also refers to the running of businesses for travellers, such as hotels and tours.
WHY DO TOURISTS VISIT ANOTHER COUNTRY?
There are different reasons why a person might decide to travel to another country, including for business, to visit family and friends, or for pleasure. Tourists usually want to enjoy the unique experiences offered by the place they are visiting, whether they are cultural landmarks or natural sites.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TOURISM?
Tourism can bring many benefits to a country. Firstly, tourists bring money to the nation – not only will their spending support the tourism industry, but also, local businesses, ranging from restaurants to shops. Secondly, a prosperous tourism industry can lead to new businesses opening and this creates job opportunities for the locals. Additionally, the money brought into the country by tourism may be used by the government to improve roads, buildings, transport and other facilities.
WHAT CAN LOCALS DO?
Even if you do not work in the tourism industry, as a local, you still play a role in influencing how a tourist views your country. Part of the travelling experience for tourists is their interaction with the locals. For this reason, it is important that locals are friendly and helpful to tourists – for example, even something as simple as smiling at tourists can make them feel more welcome. If the tourist enjoys their experience in the country they are visiting, they are more likely to return, encourage others to make the same trip or even write positive reviews online. In the long run, this will help the tourism industry prosper and the country will be able to enjoy all the benefits this brings.
TOURISM AND AFRICA
Africa offers a special experience for tourists. Not only does the continent have special sites, such as Egypt’s Ancient Pyramids and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, but also, unique cultures. Tourists may also visit Africa for the purpose of going on safari for a chance to see animals in the wild that cannot be found anywhere else.
AFRICA’S DEVELOPING TOURIST INDUSTRY
CEach year, more and more tourists travel to Africa. Currently, the four African nations with the most successful tourist industry are Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and South Africa. However, Africa’s tourism industry still has the potential to grow. But it is important that this is done in a sustainable way so as to protect the continent’s natural resources.
