What makes good governance? #7 in series: Protection from violence

GOVERNANCE AND PROTECTION FROM VIOLENCE

Governance is about those who have power and how this power is used. Governance happens in both business and in government. For example, governance can be linked to a farmer increasing the money he gives to those who work for him. Governance can come in many forms and can change all the time. Besides infrastructure and the media, one way a person can measure change is looking at how protection from violence changes.

THE HARM CAUSED BY VIOLENCE

Violence comes in many forms. There is violence towards women and girls because of their sex. There is violence between people due to arguments. There is violence between people about control. Every form of violence can hurt a person physically but its effects can be much greater than that.

If violence is common, then the long-term growth of a community is hurt. Lots of violence means people are unable to continue farming or running their businesses. This violence stops families from supporting themselves.

Many people work towards preventing violence. This can be done by making sure that the police are fair and the government offers protection. Another way is to talk within communities about how violence can be prevented. Education is a key aspect of preventing violence, because through education, people can see and judge in what ways violence can be avoided.

STOPPING VIOLENCE SHOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR EVERYONE

Many people all over Sub-Saharan Africa are doing amazing work to stop violence. Nations such as Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda have created laws to fight domestic violence towards women. Kenya criminalises both physical and verbal violence towards women.

http://bit.ly/2eV0HsrViolence can often be fatal for women. Stopping violence towards women will therefore allow them to feel safer in their communities. This safety will give them a better chance at getting an education and finding secure work that allows them to contribute to their communities and families.

Everyone all over the world has a responsibility to stop violence. The United Nations is an organisation that has set up many programmes to help women who suffer from violence and abuse. The United Nations itself has not avoided violence as peacekeepers of the United Nations have been reported as sexually abusing women in the Central African Republic. This example shows how no one and no organisation can ignore responsibility for violence. Many African nations are working hard towards stopping this violence. The work should be recognised and replicated by nations all over the world.

STOPPING VIOLENCE CAN MAKE SPACE FOR INNOVATION

By preventing violence and protecting vulnerable people such as women and children, nations will have lower mortality rates and higher standards of living. This all helps individuals in allowing them to pursue goals in business or the family. New ideas that help people improve their work can be created. African nations are home to some of the most creative and innovative ideas at the moment. Decreasing violence could lead to even more ideas and innovation.

MEASURING GOVERNANCE THROUGH PROTECTION

Assessing changes in governance by looking at how violence is stopped, people can see how governance can work for them. Measuring good governance allows people to see how they are affected by changes around them. By thinking about how violence could be prevented, people are independently working towards impacting the world around them.
