10 GREAT AFRICAN WOMEN

African women contribute to society in so many ways, from the home to the global government. Here are just 10 great African women making a difference in the world today!

CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE (NIGERIA)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a world-famous author who has won many prizes for her writing. She is bringing stories about Nigeria and Africa to the rest of the world. Chimamanda is also a feminist, speaking and writing about the importance of women’s rights.

ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF (LIBERIA)

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, became the first elected female president of Africa in 2006. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 (shared with Leymah Gbowee from Liberia and Tawakkol Karman from Yemen) for her work to bring peace.

FATOU BOM BENSOUDA (THE GAMBIA)

Fatou Bom Bensouda, from the Gambia, became the first African woman to become chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in 2012. As a lawyer, she fights to make sure that some of the worst international crimes against humanity are punished.

LEYMAH GBOWEE (LIBERIA)

Leymah Gbowee, a peace activist from Liberia, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 (shared with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from Liberia and Tawakkol Karman from Yemen). In 2003, she helped to end the Second Liberian Civil War by leading thousands of women in peaceful protest. Leymah continues to work to bring peace in the world, and opportunities for women and youth in Liberia.

LUPITA AMONDI NYONG’O (KENYA)

Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is the first Kenyan actress to win an Academy Award. She is using her Hollywood fame to share African stories and beauty all across the world. In addition, she is also working improve women’s health and protect elephants.

MIRIAM MAKEBA (SOUTH AFRICA)

Also known as Mama Africa, Miriam was a South African singer and activist. Her songs have brought attention to apartheid and civil rights movements. Popular in many countries, she shared both African music and the fight for human rights with the rest of the world.

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA (NIGERIA)

An economist and politician, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has served as Finance Minister of Nigeria. She was called “Okonjo-Wahala,” or “Trouble Woman,” when she was Finance Minister because of her fight against corruption in the Nigerian government. Her work is helping to grow the economies of Nigeria and other developing countries.

OUMOU SANGARE (MALI)

Oumou Sangaré is a popular singer from Mali, often called “The Songbird of Wassoulou.” When she was younger, she helped her mother earn money for the family by singing. Her songs are not just beautiful, but also discuss social issues such as women’s rights.

SARAN KABA JONES (LIBERIA)

Saran Kaba Jones is a social activist and businesswoman from Liberia. At a young age, Saran is already a leader as the founder of FACE Africa. FACE Africa works to provide safe drinking water and sanitation to communities in Africa, and also provide education to women.

WINNIE BYANYIMA (UGANDA)

Winnie Byanyima from Uganda is both an engineer and politician! She became the first female Ugandan aeronautical engineer, working with airplanes for Uganda Airlines. Today, she also works with international organisations to improve the lives of the poor.
