Introduction to the different types of forces in the world

JENNA ELLIOTT

WHAT TYPES OF FORCES ARE THERE?

The types of forces can be split into two sections: Contact forces vs Action-at-a-distance forces.

Contact forces need the objects to be touching. Action-at-a-distance forces do not need the objects to touch.

TYPES OF CONTACT FORCES

Frictional Force:

This is the force that stops objects sliding over one another. This pushes or pulls, but always works against the motion of the objects to stop them moving.

Tension:

– This is the force in a string or rope when you pull either end. Imagine you are holding one end of a rope, and your friend is holding the other. If you both pull the ends, you will cause a tension to be in the rope. This tension is the force you feel pulling your end of the rope towards your friend. It is also the force your friend feels pulling them towards you. The force you both feel will have the same size, but be in opposite directions.

Reaction Force:

This is the push on your hand from a solid object when you try to move it.

Air Resistance:

This is the force that pushes against motion of an object through the air. For example, if you dragged a large plastic bad through the air, you would find it harder to move if it was spread out than if it was squished to be small. This is because when the bag is spread out it has a larger area, and therefore a larger air resistance, so there is a larger force preventing you from moving the bag through the air.

Elastic Force:

This is the force that pulls on you when you stretch a spring or piece of elastic, or pushes on you when you squash it.

THE TYPES OF ACTION-AT-A-DISTANCE FORCES

This is the force that pushes against motion of an object through the air. For example, if you dragged a large plastic bad through the air, you would find it harder to move if it was spread out than if it was squished to be small. This is because when the bag is spread out it has a larger area, and therefore a larger air resistance, so there is a larger force preventing you from moving the bag through the air.

Gravitational Force:

This is the force that pulls us toward the centre of the earth. This is also known as the ‘force of gravity’. It is a force that attracts all objects with mass towards each other. Technically all things with mass are pulled by gravity towards all other things with mass. That means that you are being pulled towards trees and rocks and other people. The reason you don’t feel this force is that it is very weak. Only objects with a very large mass, such as the Earth, our planet, cause a big enough force for us to feel the effects.

Electrical Force:

This is the force a push or pull between two charged objects. Charges are properties of a material due to the number of electrons and protons in an object. Electrons are very small amount of matter which are charged. The electron is negatively charged. Protons are also very small amounts of matter, but are positively charged. Charge is a property of an object. Two objects with the same charge are pushed away from each other by the electrical force. Two objects with different charges are pulled towards each other by the electrical force.

Magnetic Force:

This is the force a magnetic material feels in a magnetic field. Magnets are objects that have a north and a south magnetic pole. The south pole of a magnet is pulled towards the north poles of other magnets, and pushed from the south poles by the magnetic force.
